Dryobates pubescens
Overview
The Downy Woodpecker is the smallest woodpecker in North America and a familiar resident of wooded neighborhoods. It explores slender branches and weed stems that are often too light for larger woodpeckers.
Identification
Black-and-white plumage, a broad white stripe down the back, and a short, fine bill distinguish this compact woodpecker. Adult males have a small red patch on the back of the head; outer tail feathers usually show dark spots.
Range
Resident through most of Alaska, Canada, and the United States, with only limited seasonal movement.
Habitat
Deciduous and mixed woods, riparian groves, orchards, parks, suburbs, and brushy areas containing saplings or dead wood.
Diet
Mostly beetle larvae, ants, caterpillars, and other insects, plus seeds, berries, and sap; frequently takes suet and sunflower seeds at feeders.
