Sitta carolinensis
Overview
The White-breasted Nuthatch is a sturdy, year-round woodland songbird that moves headfirst down trunks and along large branches. It stores seeds in bark crevices and often joins mixed-species flocks in winter.
Identification
Blue-gray back, white face and underparts, rusty undertail, short tail, and a long slightly upturned bill. Males have a glossy black crown and nape; females usually have a grayer crown.
Range
Resident across much of southern Canada, the United States, and the wooded highlands of Mexico, with gaps in the most treeless regions.
Habitat
Mature deciduous and mixed forest, open pine-oak woodland, river groves, orchards, parks, and wooded neighborhoods.
Diet
Insects and spiders gleaned from bark during warmer months, with nuts, acorns, and seeds especially important in fall and winter.
