Icterus bullockii
Overview
Bullock's Oriole is a colorful western songbird that weaves a deep hanging nest in tall trees. It gleans insects from foliage and also visits flowers and ripe fruit.
Identification
Adult males are orange with a black crown, back, throat, and eye line plus a large white wing patch. Females and immature birds are yellow-orange on the head and tail with grayish upperparts and pale wingbars.
Range
Breeds across western North America from southern Canada through the western United States and northern Mexico. It winters mainly in Mexico and parts of Central America.
Habitat
Riparian woodland, open deciduous groves, cottonwoods, parks, orchards, ranches, and shade trees in otherwise open country.
Diet
Insects and spiders, fruit, berries, and nectar.
