Overview
The Song Sparrow is a widespread North American sparrow whose appearance varies considerably across its range. It is best known for its persistent, individually varied songs delivered from exposed shrubs and low perches.
Identification
Most populations are brown and gray with heavy streaking on the breast that often gathers into a central spot. A gray eyebrow, brown face stripes, and a rounded tail help identify it, though color and size vary geographically.
Range
Found from Alaska and Canada through most of the United States and into Mexico. Northern and interior populations migrate, while many coastal and southern populations remain in place throughout the year.
Habitat
Dense low vegetation near water, including marsh edges, stream corridors, brushy fields, coastal scrub, gardens, and weedy urban margins.
Diet
Seeds and fruit dominate outside the breeding season; insects and other small invertebrates become especially important in spring and summer.
